What’s AN

Esophageal Motility Test?

An esophageal motility study, or esophageal manometry test, examines esophagus contractions and relaxation. A flexible catheter is inserted through the nose into the esophagus. This assessment helps diagnose:

  • Regurgitation
  • Esophageal spasms
  • Swallowing issues
  • Severe gastroesophageal reflux
  • Chest pain

Esophageal manometry prepares for esophageal surgery too. For esophageal manometry in Texas, connect with Specialized Gastroenterology and Medical Associates for a location near you.

What to Expect on the Day Before an Esophageal Motility Study:

Before your esophageal motility study, your Specialized Gastroenterology and Medical Associates provider will provide instructions for preparation. Typically, you can stick to your regular eating routine the day before the test. After midnight, avoid eating or drinking, except for medications. Follow your GI doctor’s guidance diligently. Medication specifics will be covered, generally staying unchanged. Special instructions emerge for anticoagulant users (e.g., aspirin, warfarin, anti-inflammatories, Coumadin®, Plavix®) and diabetics.

What to Anticipate on Your Esophageal Motility Study Day:

Arrive at the endoscopy center 30 minutes pre-exam for paperwork and prep.

In the treatment area, recline on an exam table. Numbing gel goes in one nostril. A slender tube is placed gently in the nose, and swallowing helps guide it into the esophagus. The nurse assesses the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) muscle, followed by other esophageal muscles’ contractions. During this phase, drink 10 – 20 sips of water. Afterward, the exam ends, and the tube is removed. This evaluation lasts around 30-60 minutes.

No sedation is needed, so you can leave after. Eating and drinking are usually allowed post-discharge. Specifics on medications, activity, and eating will be given before you leave.

When will I Receive my Esophageal Motility Test Results?

Test results become available after your exit from the endoscopy facility since data analysis takes time for graph and table generation. Your provider will interpret results later. Expect communication within a week at a Texas facility to discuss findings from the esophageal motility assessment.

Are there Risks Associated with Esophageal Motility Testing?

Esophageal motility assessments are generally safe, with complications affecting less than 1% of patients. Most complications are not severe, though some could result in hospitalization and surgery. Before the procedure, Specialized Gastroenterology and Medical Associates nursing staff will explain risks via a consent form.

Although rare, esophageal perforation might occur during the procedure. This could be identified during the test or later. Perforations often require surgery and hospitalization.

Swiftly contact the doctor’s office if issues arise post-exam, including bleeding, fever, or increased abdominal pain.

Like any test, esophageal motility has limitations. A small inherent risk of overlooking health issues exists. Regular visits and symptom discussions with your provider are crucial.

Are there Alternatives to an Esophageal Motility Study?

The alternatives somewhat depend on the initial purpose of the esophageal manometry test. For many, it’s the prime approach to gauge esophagus muscle capacity. Yet, an esophagram, alone or as part of a barium swallow/upper GI, can also evaluate the esophagus.
