What’s an

ERCP

Specialized Gastroenterology and Medical Associates conducts endoscopic evaluations to diagnose different gastrointestinal ailments in patients. ERCP, known as endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, is a procedure involving a thin, flexible “scope” inserted through the mouth, gently maneuvered to the duodenum. Fitted with a camera and light, this tube enables the medical expert to observe the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, bile duct entrance, and pancreatic duct. An ERCP may be necessary to pinpoint the cause of various gastrointestinal issues, including:

  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Irregular liver test
  • Unusual x-ray findings
  • Pancreatitis

What to Expect During ERCP:

Your provider will request your arrival at the Texas endoscopy center 1 – 1.5 hours before the procedure for paperwork and prep. You’ll change into a gown, get an IV line for sedation, and be monitored for vital signs.

In the procedure room, you’ll lie on your abdomen as IV sedation begins, administered gradually for safety. An endoscope enters through your mouth and advances through the upper digestive tract, aided by air. Iodine-based contrast dye is injected into the bile and pancreatic ducts, allowing x-rays to identify abnormalities.

Based on findings, the procedure may involve biopsies, sphincterotomy, stone removal, or stent placement. The evaluation typically lasts 30 – 90 minutes.

Afterward, you’ll be monitored in a recovery area until sedation wears off, usually within 45 – 60 minutes. Arrange for a ride home, avoid strenuous activities, and follow provided instructions regarding eating and medications. In some cases, hospital overnight stay may be required.

When can I Expect my ERCP Findings?

After the ERCP concludes, your provider will discuss the results. Typically, patients won’t recall due to sedation effects. We advise having someone accompany you to hear the findings. You’ll receive a written summary and be informed of test results, including biopsies, usually within a week.

Are there Risks Linked to ERCP?

ERCP is generally very safe, with most complications not life-threatening. Potential complications could require surgery or hospitalization. Prior to the procedure, a consent form is discussed with the patient by nurses. Doctor’s review of risks follows, addressing any concerns.

Acute pancreatitis is the primary complication, occurring in 5 – 8% (possibly 20%). Symptoms include nausea, pain, vomiting, and fever. Most cases are mild, with <4 days of hospitalization. Rarely, severe cases arise.

Sedative-related reactions might occur, such as IV irritation, heart effects, allergies, and breathing issues. Bleeding might result from biopsy or sphincterotomy. Major bleeding is uncommon.

Perforation might happen, requiring hospitalization and surgery. This is rare, even with biopsy.

5 – 10% might not complete ERCP. Alert the doctor if post-test symptoms like bleeding, fever, or increased pain arise.

Like any test, ERCP has limitations. Minor risks of undetected diseases exist. Regularly see your doctors and communicate new symptoms or concerns.

For Texas ERCP needs, Specialized Gastroenterology and Medical Associates gastroenterologists can assist in deciding the best approach.

Are ERCP Alternatives Available?

Alternatives to ERCP depend on the underlying condition. For most patients, ERCP is primary for pancreatic and biliary issues. However, magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP), percutaneous transhepatic cholangiogram (PTC), echo-endoscopy, and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) can assess ducts. MRCP is diagnostic only. Abnormalities are treated with ERCP or surgery. EUS and PTC have treatment options. Your Specialized Gastroenterology and Medical Associates provider will guide your personalized approach.
